Plant perennial.
Roots rhizomes absent; tubers oblong.
Leaves emersed leaves to 45 cm, petioles recurved, blades linear to sagittate, 2–18 × 2–10 cm; floating leaves to 100 cm, blades usually sagittate or cordate, 7–8 × 3–4 cm; submersed leaves flat, to 40 cm.
Inflorescences emersed, with 2–10 whorls, 10–20 cm, lowest inflorescence node with 3 pistillate flowers; peduncle 10–50 cm; pedicels cylindrical, 0.5–2 cm.
Flowers to 25 mm in diameter; sepals recurved; petals without spot at base.
Fruits heads 0.5–1.5 cm in diameter; achenes ovoid, 1–2.5 mm, wing 1 or absent; beaks terminal, erect, 0.1–0.5 mm.
Ponds, lake shores, ditches. Flowering Jun–Sep.
