Cornerstone Volunteer Day
- Bird Box Install -
Monday, March 24, 9am-3pm
(lunch provided)

Join us for a volunteer day at Cornerstone as we welcome in spring! We recently had almost 20 bird boxes donated to us; the birds there will appreciate new nesting places. Volunteers will help prepare the bird boxes and install on posts.

We will start by learning about the bird species that frequent Cornerstone for its variety of critical habitat. You’ll learn about the recent restoration work at the property done in partnership with other local conservation agencies.

This volunteer day could involve: carrying supplies out, helping to lift boxes and poles, walking 1+ miles on uneven terrain (depending on the location of the box) . Volunteers must be able to lift 10lbs. Please dress appropriately; good footwear is strongly encouraged. Bring your own gloves and safety glasses if you have them. Tools and supplies will be provided. We will have a porta potty on site. Because this is a long day and we appreciate your time, we will be providing lunch. If you are only able to stay for part of the time, that’s fine!

If we have time, we will also install our new interpretive signs and tackle some more invasive Hawthorn.

Cornerstone is located in northcentral Polk County. Directions will be provided after you RSVP. Please fill out the form below and you'll receive follow up information from our Outreach Coordinator.

Volunteers will be required to sign a liability waiver available at check in.

Polk SWCD acquired Cornerstone in 2016. As part of a long-term vision, these 87 acres will continue to hold onto, and expand, the grassland and oak savanna with portions of Oak woodland with a transition to mixed woodland and conifer forest in the southern portion of the property. To achieve these long-term goals, the existing woodlot will be harvested and replanted as grassland and oak habitat types, developed and managed to match and complement the existing oak areas. Significant efforts will be required to establish a native grass understory in this area to prevent the expansion of invasive vegetation populations. Additional areas restored to native prairie will improve Cornerstone’s ability to house additional sensitive bird species, increase native forb species populations and forage quality for oak associated birds, mammals, and invertebrates, as well as wet meadow and riparian species who frequent or reside in nearby areas.
